Introducing the new Disco, strange name, different design, awesome new package!

The new take on Drones from Parrot is no longer a Quadcopter. The Disco, which is to be showcased at CES in Las Vegas, is a new fixed wing single rotor drone. This new fixed wing unit boasts a 50mph speed (nearly 100km/h) and some new advanced tech from Parrot which they claim makes it un-crashable. I look forward to putting this to the test.

Because this unit is so light, just 700 grams, and has only a single rotor to power it has a currently unprecedented 45 minute flight time on a single charge. It’s light material is very durable to survive crashes should their “uncrashable” claim not hold up. The front eye of the unit is a 1080p 14-megapixel camera, the same one equipped in the Bebop 2 drones.

The suite of tech to make this fixed wing flyable for the average user includes a gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer and a GPS Pitot speed sensor allowing the Disco to automatically smooth out issues before they become unrecoverable. The Disco also comes equipped with 32GB of on-board storage for video and works with both the Freeflight app from Parrot as well as their more precise Sky Controller. The Disco will also be compatible with other third-party flight control systems.

To start flying this new toy simply shake it to reset the sensors and then toss it into the air. The drone will level itself and fly in circles until you begin sending control signals. To land simply tell it what kind of landing to perform and watch as the Disco takes care of everything for you.

In an interview Vanessa Loury was quoted as saying “It is the first easy-to-use and ready to fly ‘flying wing’ for consumers,”.

“The advantage is it is more elegant, more graceful. You really fly like a bird,”.

“The idea is to enable people to simply say “turn right, turn left” and the autopilot will do the rest, to make it stable. It’s impossible to have any wrong maneuvers with the Disco. It will never fall down.”
